Error:
Cannot open user default database. login failed  when you an attach mdf to sql express instance.

Fix:
The one worked for me was,
SQL Configuration manager - > Restart the SQLEXPRESS (1) instance.

If you try it , post it either way , worked or not worked. Also what worked for you.
